Pakington Street’s newest tutoring program is planting seeds of confidence in school-aged children.
Director of Sprout Tutoring Lena Phillips brings 12 years of teaching experience to Geelong West.
“I was a primary school teacher for 10 years in Sydney,“ she says.
As a classroom teacher, Lena identified strategies to engage diverse learners in the classroom and school community.
“I am passionate about giving children confidence and the ability to take control of their learning.“
Sprout Tutoring incorporates a holistic view of the Australian English Curriculum, and aims to support children and families in their academic success at school.
“Tutoring gives children the space and time to focus on learning without distraction.
“For a lot of children, tutoring allows them to have concepts reinforced that they’re a little bit uncertain about.
“The sessions will help build a strong relationship between the child, their family and education.“
Lena can customise tutoring packages to suit the learning needs of each child.
“Working one-on-one with students allows me to develop strong connections with my students.
“Being given the opportunity to have a deep understanding of their prior knowledge and current needs allows me to shape their learning experiences to be exactly what they need to inspire and motivate them to think, learn and grow.“
Lena creates programs for school-aged children in Prep through to Year 6.
“I’m also doing a pre-Prep class – it’s like a school readiness program.
“It reinforces skills and concepts children will need to engage confidently at school.“
Other programs include Primary Prep to Grade 6, English programs, mathematics programs and parent workshops.
Lena says within just a few sessions parents will notice a difference in their child’s confidence.
“I work with children at their own pace.
“In a school setting, they’re often rushing to get through the curriculum. We don’t move on until they understand it.
“It’s rewarding because you can see children taking control of their learning and they can self-reflect, assess and evaluate.
“School should be a very enjoyable experience for them, rather than something that causes them anxiety.
“When children are confident with the academic side of school, they can engage well with the other sides of school too.“
